1. Introduction:

Escaping Jail is a medieval puzzle that requires logic to solve.  This 
puzzle was originally made from wood.  There are 10 different rectangles 
and squares that are held within a container. You must move the largest 
square from point A to point B. It requires over 100 moves to solve.  If 
you are stumped there is a code which will unlock the solution and is 
available for free from the internet.

2. User License Agreement:

This product is protected by copyright law.  Since this is freeware, 
"no charge to use this program", there is no warranty that comes with 
this product.  In no event will I, James D. Swanson, the author or any 
contributors be liable to you for any damages, including incidental or 
consequential damages, arising out of the use of this program, even if 
advised of the possibility of such damages.  By installing this product, 
you acknowledge that you have read this license, understand it and agree 
to be bound by its terms as the complete and exclusive statement of the 
agreement between us.


As an End User you are prohibited to redistribute any of the files included 
with this product (Escaping Jail).  Distributors, please see below for 
distribution information.

3. System Requirements:

     # 486/66 processor or higher.
     # VGA monitor.
     # Windows 95.
     # A maximum of 7 meg of disk space.
         (2 meg for the zip file)
         (580k for the EscapingJail executable)
         (4.5 meg for the accompanying DLL, OCX files)
         (Note: some systems may already contain the DLL or OCX files)

4. Solution Code information:

If you are stumped on figuring out how to solve the puzzle there is a code
which can be entered to unlock the solution.  The code can be found on my
web site http://jdswanson.home.att.net and is available for free.  No 
registration of any kind is necessary.  Look for the product by name and 
then click on the Solution Code link.

5. Installation Instructions:

  Note for the cautious: You may want to backup the DLL files listed in the
                         SETUP.LST file.  These are all Microsoft DLL's.


To install Escaping Jail from a download:

  1. Unzip this program in any directory, preferably an empty one.
  2. Run the setup.exe program.
  3. The program will then check for "out of date" dependencies.
     If there are out of date dependencies, let the program update the
     necessary files and reboot, then run setup again.
  4. It will give you the option of where you want to install Escaping Jail.

To install Escaping Jail from diskette:

  1. Execute the setup.exe on disk 1.
  2. The program will then check for "out of date" dependencies.
     If there are out of date dependencies, let the program update the
     necessary files and reboot, then run setup again.
  3. It will give you the option of where you want to install Escaping Jail.


Note: For a complete list of files that will be installed, view the 
SETUP.LST file included with this package.

6. Uninstall Instructions:

To uninstall Escaping Jail:
  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Select Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Highlight Escaping Jail
  4. Click the Add/Remove button.

7. Redistribution Information:

This product can be distributed through Online Services, SYSOPS and User 
Groups, but you must comply with the EULA for Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0. 
(Please refer to section 4.1.1 (g) 1. of the file titled MSEULA.TXT which is
included in this package).  All files in the original distribution of
Escaping Jail must be distributed in conjunction with, and as part of, 
Escaping Jail.

8. Files Distributed with this Product:

    EscapingJail.exe  This is the main executable.
    MakeBack.bat  Creates backup install disks onto floppies.
    setup.exe     This is the program to install Escaping Jail.
    SETUP.LST     This is the file used to install and uninstall.
                  (Lists all files including DLL & OCX files)
    Escapi#.CAB   There should be 2 of these files, Escapi1.cab and 
                  Escapi2.cab.  These files contain all of the files listed
                  in SETUP.LST. View the properties of each .DLL and .OCX
                  file for the copyright information.
    MSEULA.TXT    This is Microsoft's End User License Agreement for Visual 
                  Studio 6.0.  Distributors must comply with this EULA.

9. Create Backup Install Disks:

  1. Execute MakeBack.bat 

  OR

  1. Copy the files: SETUP.EXE, SETUP.LST and Escapi1.CAB to disk #1.
  2. Copy Escapi2.CAB and README.TXT to Disk #2.

  Note:  Keep your registration code handy in case you have to reinstall.
